6 Day Umbwe route

Kilimanjaro: The Journey of a Lifetime.

Trekking Overview

The Lemosho Route is a relatively new addition to Kilimanjaro climbers’ options. It was built to move the Shira Route to a lower elevation starting point, giving climbers more time to acclimate. Instead, the Lemosho route begins at the Londorossi Gate, which stands at 2,100m and provides a much safer starting point for the climb.
This route, unsurprisingly, may provide the best acclimation option for climbers. As a 7-day climb, you’ll have plenty of time to adjust your body as you make your way towards Uhuru Peak. This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and spends two days working through the rainforests along the foothills, providing unique vantage points along the way.

The accommodation provided is in the form of tents pitched at each campsite, with shared washrooms throughout the trek.

On Day 1, you begin your adventure at the Umbwe Gate, where you’ll register before starting your trek through the lush rainforest. The trail quickly becomes steeper, and you’ll ascend through dense vegetation. After a steady climb, you reach Umbwe Camp, situated at 2,850m (9,350ft), for your first overnight stay. The focus today is on acclimatization and adjusting to the altitude.

Distance: 10km Duration: 5-6 Hours
Elevation: 1,650m (5,413ft) to 2,850m (9,350ft)
Accommodation: Umbwe Camp

DAY 2

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

On Day 2, the trek continues from Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp. This section is known for its steep climbs and the famous Barranco Wall, a rocky ascent that provides a challenging yet rewarding experience. Once at Barranco Camp, located at 3,950m (12,960ft), you’ll have panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. The night is spent here, allowing time for acclimatization.

Distance: 6km Duration: 5-6 Hours
Elevation: 2,850m (9,350ft) to 3,950m (12,960ft)
Accommodation: Barranco Camp

DAY 3

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Day 3 features a shorter trek with some ascents and descents before reaching Karanga Camp. In the morning, you’ll climb the Barranco Wall, then traverse a ridge and descend into the Karanga Valley. While the hike is relatively short, it aids in acclimatization as you gradually ascend. The camp sits at 4,035m (13,272ft), offering stunning views. Overnight at Karanga Camp to rest and recharge.

Distance: 4km Duration: 3-4 Hours
Elevation: 3,950m (12,960ft) to 4,035m (13,272ft)
Accommodation: Karanga Camp

DAY 4

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Day 4 is a short but steady ascent to Barafu Camp at 4,673m (15,331ft). As you move through the alpine desert, the landscape becomes more barren, with spectacular views of both Mount Mawenzi and Kibo Peak. Upon reaching Barafu Camp, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the summit attempt later that night. This day is key for acclimatization and conserving energy for the challenging summit ahead.

Distance: 4km Duration: 3-4 Hours
Elevation: 4,035m (13,272ft) to 4,673m (15,331ft)
Accommodation: Barafu Camp

DAY 5

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

We begin our ascent between midnight and 2 a.m., tackling the most challenging part of the trek. Heading toward the summit, we pass between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, navigating steep switchbacks and scree toward Stella Pointon the crater rim. At Stella Point, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking sunrise, with faster hikers reaching the summit in time to catch the view.
From Stella Point, it’s a final one-hour climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Congratulations! You’ve reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and all of Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, we pause to savor the moment. We then begin our descent to Mweka Camp, stopping for lunch and a brief rest at Barafu. Due to the loose gravel and volcanic ash, gaiters and trekking poles are essential for safety and comfort. Enjoy a well-earned rest and your final night on the mountain at Mweka Camp.

Distance: 16.36km Duration: 10-13 Hours
Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft

farewell to your guides, cooks, and porters—be sure to tip them! We
begin the descent to Mweka Park Gate, where you’ll receive your
summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting at Mweka Village to drive
