Mount Meru Trekking Tour

Where Every Step Leads to Wonder.

Trekking Overview

Mount Meru, rising 4,566 meters within Tanzania’s Arusha National Park, offers one of East Africa’s most rewarding and scenic trekking experiences. The trek begins in wildlife-rich forests where trekkers often spot giraffes, buffalo, and monkeys before climbing through lush montane woodlands and open moorlands toward the crater rim. The ascent is moderately challenging, with steep ridgelines and a long summit day, but it is highly rewarding—especially at sunrise, when sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro appear above the clouds. Less crowded than Kilimanjaro and ideal for acclimatization, Mount Meru provides a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and volcanic drama, making it an excellent choice for both first-time trekkers and experienced climbers.

Trip Itinerary

Itinerary Details - Day-by-day

DAY 1: Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut (2,500m)
The trek begins at Momella Gate, where you enter the lush forests of Arusha National Park. The trail gradually ascends through open grasslands and wooded areas, offering frequent sightings of giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, and various monkey species. The scenery is diverse and peaceful, with gentle slopes that help ease you into the trek. After 5–6 hours of steady walking, you arrive at Miriakamba Hut, nestled in the forest with beautiful views over the valley.

DAY 2: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut (3,570m)
From Miriakamba Hut, the trail becomes steeper as you climb through montane forest to more open heather and moorland zones. The air gets cooler and the views wider as the vegetation thins. After reaching Saddle Hut in about 3–4 hours, most trekkers take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m), which offers stunning views and helps prepare for the summit attempt. The rest of the afternoon is spent resting and preparing for the early start.

DAY 3: Saddle Hut → Summit (4,566m) → Miriakamba Hut
Summit day begins around midnight with a steep ascent along a narrow volcanic ridge leading to Socialist Peak. This is the most challenging part of the trek, requiring good fitness and careful footing, but it is incredibly rewarding. As dawn breaks, you reach the summit and witness a spectacular sunrise with Mount Kilimanjaro rising above a sea of clouds. After taking in the views, you descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut. The day is long—10–14 hours—but unforgettable.

DAY 4: Miriakamba Hut → Momella Gate
The final day is a gentle descent back through the forest, retracing your route toward Momella Gate. The walk is peaceful and relaxed, offering more chances to spot wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of the park. After 4–5 hours, you reach the gate, where the trek concludes with a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for Mount Meru’s unique landscapes.
