Ruaha National Park

One of Tanzania's finest and largest national parks

Overview

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of its most untouched safari destinations, offering a true sense of wilderness and solitude. Located in the heart of southern Tanzania, the park is characterized by rugged landscapes, rolling hills, vast savannahs, and the life-giving Great Ruaha River, which attracts abundant wildlife throughout the year.

Ruaha is renowned for its exceptional predator populations, including large prides of lions, elusive leopards, cheetahs, and African wild dogs. It also hosts one of East Africa’s largest elephant populations, along with buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and a wide variety of antelope species, some of which are rarely seen elsewhere.

With over 570 recorded bird species, Ruaha is a paradise for birdwatchers, featuring both resident and migratory birds. Its remote location, fewer visitors, and dramatic scenery make Ruaha ideal for travelers seeking an authentic, uncrowded safari experience and deep connection with Africa’s wild landscapes.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry Season (June–October) – Best overall time
Wildlife gathers along the Great Ruaha River and remaining water sources, making game viewing excellent. Vegetation is thinner, roads are accessible, and predator sightings are frequent.

  • Green Season (November–March) – Best for birdwatching & scenery
The park turns lush and green, migratory birds arrive, and landscapes are beautiful. Wildlife is more dispersed, but it’s quieter with fewer visitors.

  • April–May – Low season
Heavy rains can make some areas difficult to access, and many camps close. Best avoided for general safaris.
